Nipples

cartoonLet's face facts.

Recently the Audit Bureau of Circulation released figures for December 2011. One key finding has risen from last month’s statistics; circulation of Sunday papers over the last year has fallen once more, but this time across the board.

It appears that the mighty Sunday paper is even less exclusive from the demise of print journalism compared to the weekly papers. When all the figures are accumulated, it appears that whilst circulation of weekday papers has fallen by an average of roughly 7%, Sunday paper circulation has fallen by more than 15%.

In both categories (weekly and Sunday), the Independent experienced the largest drop in circulation; around 30% - but we should not find this shocking. On the contrary, it is to be expected.

By expanding the title in 2010 to the i, the Independent effectively changed their method of output for news. They understood that one publication is still aimed at multiple audiences. By expanding the brand, it allowed them to focus each publication on their two most significant audiences – successfully transferring the biggest advantage of online news outlets into a printed format.

The i may not suit my preference for news style, but it has taken well over a year for me to understand that forming the 20p production may be one of the smartest moves in journalism since someone put nipples on page 3.
